YOUTH ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

November 2010:

MMI Honor Roll: Keegan Farrell – Keep up the great work, Keegan!

AROUND OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
CHS MUSICAL – The Crestwood High School musical will be presented on Friday and Saturday, December 10 and 11, at 7:00 pm. This year’s play is “Annie”. So get ready for your favorite redhead to sing her way into your heart – tomorrow, tomorrow. Or at least on the 10th and 11th.

The Sunday School Fall Festival was a big hit. Check out the pictures taken by Ron Rinehimer and the news article from the Mountain Peaks for a look at kids having a great time. By the way, Kimmy, I didn’t know Santa is a Packers fan.
More costumed creations were gathered in the Fellowship Hall for the Cub Scout Halloween Party. There are some really amazing costumes in that pack!
Our Boy Scout Troop 434 went camping at Ricketts Glen State Park October 9 to 11. Pictured among the hardy souls is Hunter Rinehimer.

October 2010:
At the meeting on September 3 we made plans for some things to do. We decided to have a fundraiser through the Weis Gift Certificates program. That will help with paying for things we want to do. We also will be redesigning the garden outside the Fellowship Hallway entrance. It’s gotten pretty overgrown and needs some TLC to make it look good. We are going to have a Family Game Night/Sleepover and need to set a date for it. I will get back to you about when our next meeting will be. Bring a couple of friends and some more ideas. Youth Group is for all kids in grades 7 to 12.
As we have done for several years, the members of the Youth Group are encouraged to help with the Turkey Supper. They will be working in the hall, waiting on tables and generally keeping the tables full of food and beverages. Others will be helping keep the take-out orders flowing smoothly or working at the Sunday School bake sale. Wherever they work, it’s all for a good reason – to support the work of our church. Marc

Our Cub Scouts showed off their mechanical skills by helping to assemble picnic tables which were donated to Rice Elementary. Pictured among the Scouts is Hunter Rinehimer. Scouts in Action!!
Who’s that with the CHEER-ful face? Why it’s Sami Kotarsky with the rest of the Blitz cheerleaders. The Blitz cheerleaders attended a camp sponsored by the CHS Varsity Cheerleaders. S – A – M – I – who’s the one who cheers the best – SAMI!!!
A picture of the happy couple who has been married for 50 (yes, 50 – count them) years is on the front bulletin board. Congratulations to Pete and Betty Dickson.
A picture of our kids enjoying Rally Day shows Morgan Hodle, Keirsten Whitmire, Brooke Rinehimer, Hunter Rinehimer, Alyssa Shuman and Gemma Walsh. The “big kid” with them is Jeff Shuman, who kept them entertained with games. Thanks Jeff.

September 2010:

YOUTH GROUP MEETING:

On Friday, September 3, at 5:00 pm, the Youth Group will meet at Marc Davis’ home to plan some activities and have a fun evening. All youth in grades 7 through 12 are welcome to bring their ideas. Let’s get together and do something awesome in 2010-11!!

We’re going to get our Youth Group started by meeting on September 3 at 5:00 pm at my place. We’ll have some fun and plan out some things to do. So bring your ideas. You can also bring a couple of friends. Youth Group is for all kids in grades 7 to 12. See you at the pond.      Marc

August Achievements:

Last month’s Youth Achievements listed Eric Rinehimer as making the Honor Roll at Crestwood High School. This was a misprint in the local paper and Eric should have been listed as achieving High Honors – congratulations, Eric.

Scenes from the 3rd Annual Country Concert and Motorcycle Ride for Cystic Fibrosis are on the front bulletin board. Pictured are Morgan Hodle checking out Young’s Funny Farm duck therapy display and Leah Dietrich with her cousin, Paige Ceaser, in whose honor the event is held. Leah and Paige are showing off their face painting. The rainy weather cancelled the bike ride, but the festivities at the American Legion went on as scheduled.
Sam Dauber was on the editorial board for the Crestwood High School publication Corners of Today. This Literary Arts Magazine showcases artwork, photography, original prose of short stories or poetry of students at Crestwood. Between 400 to 500 pieces were submitted for the 2009-2010 edition of which 100 were selected for publication. Corners of Today is designed, laid out and produced entirely by students. Sam is pictured with the other members of the staff and their advisor, Mr. William Reznak.
Want to know more about horses? Just ask Morgan Rinehimer, pictured with Kelly Kalada and their ride, Babe. Morgan is a member of the Tall in the Saddle 4-H Club.
Whose got those happy feet? Must be Keirsten Whitmire! Keirsten participated in the David Blight annual recital on June 27. She dances with the Tap and Jazz Combo Class.

August 2010:

It’s always great to see so many of our youth on Crestwood’s honor rolls. If you know of someone who is has earned honor roll status at other schools, please let me know so we can recognize their achievement.

Could that be BECKY BROYAN??? holding balloons and practically dancing? in church??? You bet!! Rev. Rebecca Broyan has a lot to celebrate. We are so happy to be a part of Becky’s next step in life. Her ordination was a beautiful and heart-warming service and will be happily remembered as a time of new beginnings. Thanks, Becky, for all your love of Life and your commitment to bringing that Life to others. Go with our blessings and God’s grace.
Leah Dietrich is pictured with other piano students from Michelle Millington’s classes. They recently held their annual spring recital at which certificates and pins from the National Guild of Piano Teachers Students Auditions were presented.

July 2010:

Thanks to everyone who supported us all year. We appreciate all you do, especially as role models for the kids. Through your donations, we raised $314.25 for the 30 Hour Famine. That’s in addition to the donations for Soup-er Bowl Sunday which we used to restock the Food Pantry. It really tells the kids a lot about us and giving back to God and our community.

The Honor Rolls are out for the third quarter and, again, we have a fair share of youth on them.

June 2010:

A lot of our people were involved in a lot of activities recently. Check out these pictures on the front board:
Kyle Prelewicz got himself in two pictures – both pertaining to sports, of course. We’re used to seeing him pictured with the CHS varsity hockey team. Their picture shows the team at the end of their season. It was a tough one this year as they rebuilt their team. The other picture is of a new sport to Mountain Top: Lacrosse. Kyle scored in the first period, but the Lewisburg High Team was more experienced and won in the end. We wish the new team good luck and great times!!
Robert Duffy, III, was snapped with the Easter Bunny at the Rice Township Easter Egg Hunt.
Several of our kids are pictured doing their favorite “craft” at our Sunday School Easter Party. Nate Kamowski, Robert Duffy, III, and Alyssa Shuman are showing their artistic talent painting toast. Also in the pic are Robert’s mommy, Carol, and Pre-K/K teacher, Tammy Dauber.
Diners at our Turkey Supper are pictured filling up their plates. You can see Steve Moyer and his mom, Lillian, enjoying the meal.
Emmanuel was the host for the Good Friday Service lead by pastors of the Mountain Top Ministerium. There was a very good attendance for this solemn service as the pastor’s each spoke about the seven last words of Christ.
Someone snapped pictures of members enjoying themselves to a delicious breakfast Easter morning. These pictures are on the table in the Narthex.

We would like to thank everyone for their support (past, present, and future)!!!!!

The next Youth Group meeting will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday, May 2, at Pastor Penny’s. We will have it a week ahead of our regular schedule so we don’t mess with Mother’s Day.

SOME RECENT ACTIVITIES

Soup-er Bowl Sunday
We received donations of $152.30. During the 30-Hour Famine, we divided into two groups with $76.15 each. The object is to spend as much of the money without going over (we also teach money management ☺). One team spent $75.94 and the other $75.76 for a total of $151.70 worth of food to restock the food bank. The change was donated to the food bank.
Valentines Dinner
We served 40 guests (35 adult, 2 youth and 3 free). From the sale of dinners, bows, pies and donations we made a total profit of $290.00. THANK YOU!
30 Hour Famine
30 HOURS – NO FOOD. Instead, we focus on devotions, games and we have joys, concerns and confessions at the altar late Friday night. We went to see His Last Days at Christ UCC in Conyngham. Many of the kids said the play really had a positive impact on them. Saturday we went shopping for the food bank (on an empty stomach, which was this year’s motto). When we came back we had communion and ended the famine with a spaghetti lunch.
PICTURES ARE ON THE TABLE IN THE NARTHEX
Turkey Supper
Our Youth Group is encouraged to help with the supper and it’s good to see them taking a responsible part in our church’s events.
We are planning to have an sleepover, and would like to plan some activities such as bowling or going to the movies. Be at the meeting on May 2 for more info.

30-HOUR FAMINE

We held the 30-Hour Famine on March 26 to 27. The youth were great and we did some amazing stuff, like going to see “His Last Days” at Christ UCC in Conyngham. We also did our usual grocery shopping at Weis with the money donated for Soup-er Bowl Sunday. I’ll have more details for the next newsletter.
The next Youth Group meeting will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday, April 11, at Pastor Penny’s.
As we have done for several years, the members of the Youth Group are encouraged to help with the Turkey Supper. Many of them will be working in the hall, waiting on tables and generally keeping the diners full of food and beverages. Others will be helping keep the take-out orders flowing smoothly or working at the Sunday School bake sale. YOUTH Accomplishments:

If you know of any of our youth who deserve recognition for their scholastic, talent or sports abilities, please let me know. Better yet, if there is a news article, cut it out and give it to me. Thanks, Denise
CONGRATULATIONS to the Holy Redeemer Girls Swim Team and Meredith Martin. The girls are the 2010 Wyoming Valley Conference and District Champions. That’s keeping your head above water!!
Cub Scout Pack 433 held their pinewood derby on March 14.   Hunter Rinehimer qualified as one of the three fastest times in his Webelos II den which allows him to advance to the Council Level. I feel the need for speed!!! Go, Hunter!!

ST. VALENTINE’S DINNER

The St. Valentine’s Dinner was awesome. We had a good time serving up some romance (and good food). Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success, those who purchased the food, prepared it, and who helped set up on Saturday through clean-up on Sunday. We especially want to thank everyone who came for the dinner. The kids couldn’t have done it without all your support. You really show how much you care about our youth.
The next Youth Group meeting will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday, March 14, at Pastor Penny’s.

30 Hour Famine:

The 30 Hour Famine is set for March 26 and 27. This year’s theme is “on an empty stomach”. Most of you already know how that goes. We experienced empty stomachs on previous 30-Hour Famines. The focus is that no one should die because their stomach is empty, but all around the world, kids do. Here are some stats from World Vision’s webpage:
Global Hunger & Poverty

Each day, over 25,000 children under the age of 5 die from preventable diseases such as malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and acute respiratory infections. Malnutrition is associated with over half of those deaths.

More than 1 billion people in the world don’t get enough to eat. That’s one of every seven people on the planet.

143 million children under age 5 in the developing world are underweight because of poor nutrition. That’s about one in three children in developing countries.

In the last 50 years, 400 million people worldwide have died from hunger and poor sanitation. That’s three times the number of people killed in all wars fought in the entire 20th century.

Moderately underweight children are more than four times more likely to die from infectious disease than are well-nourished children. And under-nutrition contributes to 53 percent of deaths among children under 5 globally.

Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger daily are usually poor and often lack the social safety nets we enjoy, such as soup kitchens, food stamps, and job training programs. When a family that lives in a poor country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy food, there is nowhere to turn for help.

Of the 6.6 billion people in today’s world, 2.1 billion live on less than $2 per day.
Domestic Hunger & Poverty

35.5 million people – including 12.6 million children – live in households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger. This represents more than one in ten households in the United States (10.9 percent).

4.0 percent of U.S. households experience hunger. Some people in these households frequently skip meals or eat too little, sometimes going without food for a whole day. 11.1 million people, including 430 thousand children, live in these homes.

6.9 percent of U.S. households are at risk of hunger. Members of these households have lower quality diets or must resort to seeking emergency food because they cannot always afford the food they need. 24.4 million people – including 12.2 million children – live in these homes.

Preschool and school-aged children who experience severe hunger have higher levels of chronic illness, anxiety and depression, and behavior problems than children with no hunger, according to a recent study.
Now, aren’t you glad to have a full stomach with three meals a day, plus snacks? Anyone participating is asked to begin by not eating lunch on Friday, the 26th. We’ll count down the 30 hours from there.
Marc Davis

Get ready for the next Movie/Game night.  It will be on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 7 pm.  There will be snacks and drinks, and if you want, you can bring your own favorite snack to share.  You can also bring along your favorite games and just spend some time playing them.  Don’t forget to bring along a friend or two, also.

We are planning for Soup-er-Bowl Sunday in February and the 30-Hour Famine which will be in either February or March.  So keep your calendar open for these mission events.  You all did a terrific job last year during the famine and I was proud to take you shopping at Mr. Z’s to purchase food for the food bank with the money you raised during Soup-er-Bowl Sunday.

Mashed Potato Sunday

May 6th – Mashed Potato Sunday – Mashed Potato Sunday came about during a creation class 5 years ago.  I asked my class what God creatd. One of my students Marc Davis, said God creatd mashed potatoes.  So we discussed the earth they grow in, the sun, the rain, cows for milk and butter and Mashed Potato Sunday was created!! We enjoy it every year.

April 27th 6:00 PM – Potluck/Movie night - no games or sleep over this time. Lets all sit down together and enjoy this movie.

[A Church Divided Over Leaders] I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. — 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV)
